What to Do When You're Stuck in a Season You Didn't Choose

Have you ever found yourself in a season of life and thought, This is not what I signed up for? You're not alone — and this past Sunday, I had the privilege of opening Ecclesiastes chapter 3 with you to find some honest, biblical counsel for exactly that moment.

Solomon wrote this poem as an old man who had experienced everything the world could offer — unimaginable wealth, power, wisdom, and accomplishment. And yet, looking back on it all, he wrestled with the same questions we do. What does any of it mean? Why is life so hard? Why this season, Lord?

I want to be honest with you: my sermon this week did not contain the answer to why. What I wanted to give you instead is something I believe is more immediately useful — biblical counsel for what to do when you find yourself in a season you didn't choose.

Accept the Season You Are In

This sounds simple, but it is genuinely difficult. When you're in a dry and painful place, the first instinct is to reject it. This can't be God's will for me. How can this much pain be something I should just accept?

But Solomon reminds us: "There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). When you find yourself in that desert place, stop and say, "Okay, Lord. I know where I am. I accept that I am here for this season." That act of acceptance sends a message — to yourself and to the enemy — that you are not running away from Jesus just because you're in pain. You are standing your ground.

Run Toward Christ

And I don't mean this poetically. I mean it literally. In the moment when pain is cresting and you fear it may overwhelm you — that is precisely the moment to run directly to the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing he is waiting with open arms.

Run to him in prayer. Real prayer isn't a formality or a set of recited words. It's you, inside your own mind and heart, talking to the Creator of the universe who loves you more than life. The Bible tells us that those who are in Christ have the mind of Christ. As Paul wrote in Philippians 2:5, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." Jesus is in there with you during the spinning, the fear, the doubt. Talk to him.

Run to his Word. I return often to Colossians 3:3 — "Your life is hidden with Christ in God." There is something about that verse that steadies me. You need scriptures that speak directly to your situation, and the only way to have them ready is to be in this book consistently.

Run to his people. The less you feel like going to church, the more important it is that you go. The enemy wants to isolate you. He wants to cut you off from God's Spirit, God's Word, and God's people — because when you're isolated, you're easier to take down. Cling to Jesus. The greater the pain, the harder you hold on.

Learn What God Is Teaching You

This one can sound insensitive when you're in the middle of real pain. I know. You don't want a lesson — you want relief. I understand that. But I offer this as a fellow traveler, not someone who has it all figured out.

God is sanctifying you. One of the ways he perfects the image of Christ in us is through the pain we experience. You don't have to enjoy it. But you can ask, Lord, what can you teach me through this season that will make me more like you?

And here's what I've seen happen again and again: the Lord brings someone through a season of great pain, strengthens them on the other side, and then turns them around to say, "Look — there's someone else going through what you just went through. Help them. Show them the way."

Give of Yourself to Others

Pain makes all of us selfish. That's not a moral failing — it's a natural human response. But don't let the difficulty of a hard season become an excuse for turning completely in on yourself.

Start small. Invest in the people closest to you — your spouse, your children, your coworkers. Discipline yourself to pray for them, encourage them, and keep ministering to others. Jesus said the only way to truly find life is to give it away. Become a servant, and therein you will find healing.

Look Up

Solomon ended Ecclesiastes 3 with a haunting question: "For who can enable a man to see what will happen after he dies?" (v. 22). If all we can see is this life — which ends in death and a return to dust — then what real hope is there?

The answer, of course, is Jesus.

I had the privilege recently of sitting with one of our dear saints in his final days. As I stood beside his bed and began reading 2 Timothy 4:7-8 aloud, he — eyes still closed — began to speak the words from memory alongside me: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. There is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day."

He has now received that crown.

When you find yourself down in the weeds, not sure what to do — look up. Jesus walked out of the grave on the third day, and in doing so he gave us a certain promise: no season of this life will ever have the final word. As Jesus himself said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

The whys of life are real. I know some of you are carrying heavy ones right now. But even when we don't know the why, we know the who — and he is with us in every season.
