The Rest You've Been Searching For
Meta Description: Are you truly at rest, or just going through the motions? Discover the kind of peace that only comes through a real relationship with Jesus. Have you ever met someone — or maybe been someone — who just can't seem to find peace, no matter how hard they try? This past Sunday, I shared something from Hebrews 4 that I believe speaks directly to that restlessness so many of us carry.
The writer of Hebrews uses the word rest eleven times in a single chapter. And he's not talking about sleep. He's talking about something far deeper — the settled, soul-level peace that comes from knowing you belong to Jesus.
The Rest the World Can't Give
I've been thinking about Elvis Presley lately. After his final appearance at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1975, he went back to his hotel room and wrote a short prayer on a notepad. It was later found crumpled in his trash can. He wrote: "I feel so alone sometimes. The night is quiet for me... I'll probably not rest. I have no need for all of this. Help me, Lord."
Here was a man the whole world adored — and he couldn't find rest.
Paul McCartney once described his famous song "The Long and Winding Road" not as a love song, but as a song about the unattainable. "The door you never quite reach," he said. "This is the road that you never get to the end of. You never quite get there. You never quite find what you're looking for."
That's what life looks like without Jesus. A long, winding road with no destination. And I don't say that to be harsh — I say it because I've seen it. I've watched people search through relationships, finances, social media, and a hundred other things, all trying to fill a void they can't quite name.
The good news is that void has a name — and so does the One who fills it.
What True Rest Actually Looks Like
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus himself extends this invitation:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
This is the rest Hebrews 4 is pointing us toward. Hebrews 4:3 puts it plainly: "Now we who have believed enter that rest."
That rest means knowing you're saved. It means having the hope of heaven. It means peace that doesn't depend on your circumstances, because it's rooted in your relationship with Jesus — not in how well things are going.
Let me ask you directly: Do you know you're saved this morning? Not just intellectually, but deep down — do you have that assurance?
The Word That Diagnoses and Heals
One of the most powerful things in this passage is what it says about Scripture itself. Hebrews 4:12 says:
"For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
God's Word can diagnose our spiritual health. If you're not sure where you stand, get into Scripture. Not just for facts and theology — though those matter — but because God meets us in his Word. It's alive. It speaks. It cuts through the noise and gets to the real issue.
If your life isn't lining up with what Scripture says, that's not a reason for shame — it's an invitation to grow. We're all still growing. But the question is: are you growing? Are you maturing? Is there fruit?
A High Priest Who Gets It
Here's something I love about Hebrews 4. It doesn't just tell us to pursue rest — it tells us why we can.
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet he did not sin." (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus is not a distant, untouchable deity. He walked this earth. He was tempted. The Greek word translated "empathize" literally means to suffer along with. He's been through it — and he can get you through it too.
Draw Near — Right Now
So what do we do with all of this? The final verse of the passage gives us our answer:
"Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
The King James Version says it this way: "Come boldly unto the throne of grace."
Boldly. Constantly. Without reservation. With confidence and persistence.
Satan would love nothing more than to convince you that your failures disqualify you from drawing near to God. But here's the truth: there is only one condition for approaching the throne of grace — and Jesus already met it for you. He lived the life we couldn't live. He suffered in our place. The condition has been met. So no matter what you came in with, no matter what this week has looked like — you may draw near.
My encouragement to you this week is simple: when you fail, when you doubt, when you feel far away — don't retreat. Draw near. Come boldly. He's not far. He's right there, and he understands.

Social Media Excerpt (Facebook/Instagram): Elvis Presley, one of the most famous men who ever lived, once wrote a prayer that ended with the words: "I'll probably not rest. Help me, Lord." He had everything the world could offer — and still couldn't find peace. This Sunday, we looked at what Hebrews 4 says about the kind of rest only Jesus can give — and how to actually experience it.
