From Harlot to Hero: Why Your Past Doesn't Have to Define Your Future

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered, Who are you? You know better than this. I think most of us have been there — maybe more times than we'd like to admit.

This past Sunday, I shared a message about a woman in Scripture whose story I believe was written for someone reading this right now. Her name was Rahab. And if God could take her life and turn it into something beautiful, I promise you — He can do the same for yours.

We've All Made Mistakes

Let me be honest with you. This message wasn't for the person who has it all together. This message was for everyone who has done something they shouldn't have done, said something they shouldn't have said, gone places they shouldn't have gone — and found themselves, almost without realizing it, trapped in a pattern they never intended to be in.

One decision becomes a mistake. One mistake becomes a habit. One habit becomes a lifestyle. And before long, you're looking in the mirror asking yourself how you got here.

If that's you today, I want you to keep reading. Because Rahab's story is your story too.

A Woman the World Had Written Off

In Joshua chapter 2, we're introduced to Rahab. The Bible doesn't soften it — she was a prostitute living in the city of Jericho. She was, by every social standard of her day, someone the world had written off. And yet, God hadn't written her off at all.

When Joshua sent two spies to scout out the Promised Land, they ended up at Rahab's house. Now, out of every house in Jericho, why hers? I believe it was divine providence. God will go to unlikely places when salvation is the result. He'll send someone to a crack house. He'll send someone to a jail house. He'll send someone to your house — because He is not willing that any should perish.

Those spies didn't end up at Rahab's door by accident. It was her moment. It was her time. And she recognized it.

Faith That Changes Everything

Here's what stunned me when I read this passage again in preparation for Sunday. Look at what Rahab says to those spies in Joshua 2:9-11:

"I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt... And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted... for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath."

This is a prostitute making one of the most powerful confessions of faith in the entire Old Testament. She had heard about God. She believed what she heard. And she acted on that belief.

That's faith. Not having everything figured out. Not getting your life cleaned up first. Not stopping every bad habit before you come. Romans 10:9 tells us: "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." And Romans 10:13 says: "For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Whoever. That includes Rahab. That includes me. And that includes you.

The Favor That Followed Her Faith

When the walls of Jericho came crashing down in Joshua 6, the entire city was destroyed — except for one house. Rahab's house. When the dust settled, her home was the only one still standing.

That's the favor of God. All hell can be breaking loose around you, but when the favor of God is on your life, you will still be standing when the dust clears.

But the story doesn't stop there. Turn to Matthew chapter 1 — the genealogy of Jesus Christ — and you'll find Rahab's name. She married, had a son named Boaz, and through that family line came King David, and ultimately, Jesus Christ Himself.

And then flip to Hebrews 11 — the great "Hall of Faith" — where the Bible lists the heroes of the faith. Abel. Enoch. Noah. Abraham. Sarah. And in verse 31: "By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe."

A prostitute from Jericho is listed among the heroes of faith. Don't tell me God is not a God of second chances.

Your Story Isn't Over

I've thought about Rahab's story a lot since Sunday, and I keep coming back to this: the songwriter had it exactly right. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found. Was blind, but now I see.

I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody. God saved my life. And He can save yours.

Don't leave today convinced by the enemy that your life can never change. Don't let the devil lie to you. Look at Rahab — a woman the world had counted out, now counted among the heroes of faith and written into the very family line of Jesus.

Whatever you've done, wherever you've been, God's grace is bigger than your past. If you're tired of going through the motions, if you're ready for something to change — today is your day. Come to Jesus just as you are.
