Wake Up: The Spiritual Danger of Drifting Without Knowing It
Meta Description: Are you spiritually asleep without even knowing it? Discover the signs of spiritual drowsiness and how to wake up before you fall. Have you ever woken up and had no idea when you fell asleep? One moment you were watching TV or reading, and the next — you were out. Nobody plans to fall asleep. It just happens.
That's exactly what I want to talk to you about today. Because the same thing that happens to us physically can happen to us spiritually — and the terrifying part is we don't even know it's happening.
The Strangest Story in the New Testament
I want to take you to one of the most peculiar passages in all of Scripture. It's Acts 20:7-12, and I have to warn you — it's a strange one. But God often hides profound truth in peculiar places.
Here's what it says:
"On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. 'Don't be alarmed,' he said. 'He's alive!' Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted."
Eutychus made the Bible — not for something he said, not for something he did — but for falling asleep in church, falling out of a window, dying, and coming back to life. And if Eutychus could say anything to us today, I think he'd say this: I didn't know I fell asleep.
How Spiritual Sleep Happens — Gradually
Here's what I want you to see. Falling asleep is never a single moment. It's a process. Eutychus didn't just suddenly crash. He went from engaged to distracted to tired to asleep. He started off leaning in, hungry for every word. Then it got late. His stomach was full. The lamps were flickering. He drifted to the window for some air. And before he knew it — he was gone.
That is a picture of so many of our spiritual lives. We start off on fire. We love the Word. We love community. We love Jesus. But over time, we get distracted. Then tired. And before we realize it, we're spiritually asleep.
The Apostle Paul addresses this directly in 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6:
"You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober."
God sent me to preach this message as a wake-up call. And I believe somebody reading this right now needs to hear it.
Signs You Might Be Spiritually Drowsy
How do you know if you're drifting? Here are some signs worth honestly examining:
- A loss of appetite for God's Word. When Scripture stops feeling alive to you, pay attention.
- Little or no desire to pray. Jesus had to wake his disciples and say, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation" (Luke 22:46).
- Things that used to convict you no longer bother you. You've grown comfortable where you once felt challenged.
- Avoiding accountability. When you start bristling at anyone who speaks truth into your life, that's a warning sign.
- Isolating yourself from godly community. This one is critical — because community is often what wakes us up when we can't wake ourselves.
Watch Where You're Sitting
My issue with Eutychus isn't that he fell asleep. Even the most faithful disciples get tired. My issue is where he chose to sit. Of all the places in that room, he sat in an open window on the third floor.
I want to ask you the same question I'd have asked him: Is that the best place for you to sit right now?
Where are you positioning yourself in life? Are you sitting in an open window — testing how close you can get to the edge without it becoming a problem? Because here's the truth: don't fight sleep in a window seat. It's already hard enough to stay spiritually alert without placing yourself in the most dangerous spot in the room.
We Need Each Other to Wake Up
Here's something I noticed in this passage that I can't shake. Nobody in that room went to Eutychus. Nobody said, "Hey, don't sit there. Hey, you're dozing — wake up." And he fell.
Since I don't always know when I'm falling asleep spiritually, I need community around me. I need people who love me enough to say, "I see you drifting. Wake up." That's not judgment — that's love.
And when someone does fall? Look at what Paul did. He didn't look down his nose at Eutychus from the third floor. He went down. He threw himself on that young man. Real ministry isn't looking down on people who have fallen — it's getting in the mud with them and saying, "It's not over."
That's the gospel. When we were stuck in our sin, God didn't redeem us from a distance. He came down, put on human skin, and gave his life so that we could have ours. When everyone else said there was no hope, Jesus said, "There's still life — because I'm going to give mine for them."
This Is Your Wake-Up Call
I believe today is a wake-up call for someone. You don't know you've fallen asleep until somebody says, "Wake up." Consider this that moment.
Get out of the window seat. Find a better place to stand. Get back into community with people who will speak truth into your life. Lean back into the Word. Come back to prayer. Because God has greater ahead of you than what's been behind you — but you have to be awake to walk into it.
If you've been drifting, today is the day to wake up.
