When God Comes First, Everything Changes
Monday — Understanding the Truth
Have you ever felt like you were doing all the right things but something still felt off — like life was slightly out of order?
Today's Scripture "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." — Matthew 6:33
Reflection For fifteen centuries, people believed the earth was the center of the universe. It made sense from where they stood — everything seemed to revolve around them. But they were wrong. And honestly? Most of us live that way too. Not because we're bad people, but because it's the only reality we can easily see: our needs, our worries, our goals, our day.
The sermon this week centered on a simple but life-reorienting truth: the world of the follower of Jesus does not revolve around the follower of Jesus. God is at the center. And when he's truly at the center — not just on the list, but at the top — everything else begins to find its proper place.
God works through a consistent pattern in scripture: he prepares and orders what he plans to fill. He doesn't bless chaos. He blesses what's been put in order. That's not a harsh rule — it's an invitation. An invitation to stop trying to manage everything yourself and to start by putting the right thing first.
Seeking God first isn't about earning his favor. It's about aligning your life with how he designed it to work.
Today's Step Take one quiet minute today and ask yourself honestly: What's actually first in my life right now? Not what should be — what is?
A Closing Thought You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to start with him.
You Can't Order From God Like Amazon
Tuesday — When It's Hard
Be honest — how many times have you prayed for something and deep down expected God to just... deliver it?
Today's Scripture "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." — Matthew 6:21
Reflection Here's the tension most of us live in: we want God's blessings, but we want to keep our lives arranged the way we've arranged them. We want the answered prayer, the opened door, the provision — but we're not sure we want to hand over control of what's already in our hands.
It's easier than we think to treat God like a vending machine. Put in a prayer, press the button, wait for the result. But that's not relationship. That's transaction.
Jesus knew this about us. He knew our hearts would get tangled up in money, in security, in the things we can see and touch. That's why he said what we do with our treasure reveals where our heart actually is. Not where we say it is. Where it actually is.
That's a hard mirror to look into. And it's okay to admit it feels uncomfortable. Putting God genuinely first — before your financial security, before your plans, before your comfort — requires real trust. And trust is hard when you can't see how it's all going to work out.
But here's the grace in this: God isn't asking you to be perfect. He's asking you to be honest — and then take one step toward him.
Today's Step Sit with this question today, without rushing to answer it: Is there an area of my life where I'm holding on tightly because I'm afraid of what happens if I let go?
A Closing Thought The struggle you feel isn't a sign of weak faith — it's often the beginning of real faith growing.
Open Hands, Open Life
Wednesday — Putting It Into Practice
What would it actually look like, in a practical way, to put God first — not just in theory, but in the rhythm of your real life?
Today's Scripture "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops." — Proverbs 3:9
Reflection Firstfruits is an old word with a very modern application. It simply means this: give God the first portion, not the leftovers. Not what's left after the bills. Not what's left after the fun. The first.
This week's message made a distinction worth sitting with: your budget is about stewardship — managing well what you have. But your tithe, that first ten percent, is about something deeper. It's about lordship. It's a declaration that God is first, not just in your heart, but in your actual bank account.
If that feels like a big leap, start here. Look at your finances honestly — not with guilt, but with curiosity. Where does money go first in your life? What does that reveal about what you trust most?
Then consider one concrete step. Maybe it's setting up a recurring gift, even a small one, to your church. Maybe it's writing out a simple budget for the first time and putting God at the top of it. Maybe it's just a conversation with God today: "I want to trust you with this, but I'm not there yet. Help me get there."
Tithing isn't about being pressured into giving. It's about being transformed through it. The act of giving first reshapes your heart around God's priorities — gradually, gently, and really.
Today's Step Take one practical step today: write down your monthly income and ask God what it would look like to honor him with the first portion of it.
A Closing Thought Open hands aren't empty hands — they're hands ready to receive what God has been waiting to pour in.
The Man Who Finally Let Go
Thursday — What This Looks Like in Real Life
Sometimes the best way to understand a truth is to see it lived out in someone's story.
Today's Scripture "To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance." — Matthew 25:29
Reflection Imagine a man in his mid-twenties — generous by nature, but not quite connecting the dots when it came to his finances and his faith. He knew he should tithe. He'd grown up watching his father lay out that check every Friday. But it always seemed like a rule without a reason, so he kept folding up that money and putting it in a different pocket, telling himself he'd give it later.
Later never really came. And quietly, things stayed tight. Not just financially — something felt slightly off, slightly out of alignment, like a wheel that needed balancing.
Then something shifted. He stopped asking "God, can I trust you?" — because honestly, God had already answered that question a hundred times. The question that changed everything was a different one: "God, can you trust me?"
That reframe — from passive recipient to active steward — opened something in him. He began giving first. Not because he had extra. Because he finally understood that what flowed through his hands wasn't really his to begin with. And as his hands opened, his heart changed. The financial circumstances improved, yes. But the deeper miracle was what happened inside.
That's the transformation tithing is really about. Not a transaction. A reorientation of the whole self around the God who is already faithful.
Today's Step Ask yourself today: Am I approaching God as someone waiting to receive, or as someone ready to be trusted?
A Closing Thought God isn't looking for perfect people — he's looking for people with open hands and a willing heart.
More Than a Rule to Follow
Friday — Carrying It Forward
As this week wraps up, here's one question worth carrying into the weekend: What if the thing I've been treating as a rule is actually an invitation?
Today's Scripture "'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.'" — Malachi 3:10
Reflection All week we've been sitting with this idea of putting God first — not as a religious obligation, but as a way of life that actually works. And this scripture brings it all together beautifully.
Notice what God says: Test me in this. That's not a demand. That's a dare. An invitation. He's not asking you to earn his favor — he's asking you to bring what he's already provided back to him in trust, and watch what he does with it.
The tithe isn't a test God is giving you. It's a test you get to give God. You bring the first. He opens the floodgates. That's the pattern. That's the promise.
And this isn't only about money. It's about every area of life. Your time — do you give him the first of your morning? Your relationships — do you love others from the overflow of his love for you? Your plans — do you seek his kingdom before your own agenda?
Putting God first is less a single decision and more a daily practice. And every day is a new chance to start.
Today's Step Choose one area this weekend — time, money, or relationships — and take one small step to put God genuinely first in it.
A Closing Thought You were never meant to carry all of this alone, and you were never meant to be at the center of your own story — and that is actually the most freeing news there is.
