You Don't Need the Whole Plan — Just the Next Step

Most of us want guarantees before we move. We want to see the whole staircase before we take the first step. But what if God is asking you to move before he gives you the certainty you're looking for?
That's exactly what I unpacked this past Sunday as we continued our journey through the book of Esther — and I believe it speaks directly to where many of you are right now.
God Rarely Shows You the Whole Plan
Before I even opened my Bible, I told the story of how I met my wife, Amy. I had never seen her photo. I had no guarantee she'd even want to talk to me. All I had was a name, a phone book, and what I can only describe as a prompting from God. I called her, got her answering machine, and left what I'll generously call an inspired voice message. No guarantee. Just a step of faith.
That's how God often works.
In Esther chapter 4, Esther faces the biggest decision of her life. Her cousin Mordecai has just told her that every Jewish person in the empire — her people, her family — is marked for death under a decree Haman has tricked the king into signing. And Mordecai looks at Esther and essentially says: You may be the only one who can do something about this.
But here's the problem. Approaching the king without being summoned was punishable by death. And the king hadn't called for Esther in thirty days.
Facing What God Is Really Asking
When Esther first heard that Mordecai was in mourning, her instinct was to send him fresh clothes and fix the obvious problem. I think most of us do the same thing. When God is trying to get to the root of something in our lives, we busy ourselves managing symptoms. We scroll. We distract ourselves. We do things that look like progress so we don't have to face what God is actually asking us to do.
But Mordecai sent the clothes back. You can't cover this, he was saying. You're going to have to face it.
And then he said the words that have echoed through centuries:
"Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" — Esther 4:14
Maybe that's where you are today. Maybe everything in your life — every detour, every unexpected door, every season that didn't go the way you planned — has been quietly moving you toward this moment. A conversation you need to have. A sin you need to confess. A relationship you need to fight for. A step of faith you've been putting off.
You Need Your People
Before Esther took a single step toward the king, she did something powerful. She went to her community and asked them to pray.
"Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish." — Esther 4:16
Do you have your people? The ones you can text at a moment's notice and say, "I need prayer"? I had one of those weeks this past week, and I reached out to two of my people before I ever stepped on that stage. That's not weakness — that's wisdom.
Christianity is not a solo sport. We best experience the power and presence of God together. Sitting in rows on Sunday is not the same as sitting in circles with people who know you, love you, and will pray for you when you're scared to take the next step.
If you don't have those people yet, finding them is your next step.
While You're Waiting for Clarity, God Is Waiting for Trust
Sometimes a "for such a time as this" moment doesn't feel like a burning bush. Sometimes it feels like a nudge — even an inconvenience.
I once felt a heavy prompting to call a friend while I was on a walk to the beach. My phone was back at the hotel, twenty minutes away. I turned around, walked back, made the call — and discovered my friend was in a crisis, holding a gun, wondering if anyone cared. God knew what I didn't. And that inconvenient walk back to the hotel was exactly where God needed me.
That's how it works. You don't always get the full picture. You just get the next step.
Esther didn't know how the king would respond. She didn't know if she'd walk out of that throne room alive. But she gathered her people, she prayed, and she moved. If I perish, I perish.
What would it look like for you to have that kind of faith today?
What's Your Next Step?
I want to close with the same invitation I gave on Sunday. You don't need all the details. You just need to take one step. Maybe it's attending church consistently. Maybe it's finally getting baptized. Maybe it's finding a community group where you can be known. Maybe it's tithing — trusting God in a real, tangible way with your finances. Maybe it's a conversation you've been avoiding, a forgiveness you've been withholding, or a prayer you've been afraid to pray.
Or maybe your next step is the most important one of all: stepping away from your old life and stepping toward Jesus for the first time.
Whatever it is — take it. You don't need the whole plan. God is faithful, and he knows what you don't.
If I perish, I perish. And if he's faithful? We're going to see his faithfulness.
I'd love for you to watch the full message if you missed it or want to share it with someone who needs to hear it this week. And if you're ready to take your next step — whether that's finding community, getting baptized, or giving your life to Christ — reach out to us. We'd love to walk with you.

This week's message from the book of Esther is for anyone who's been waiting for the whole plan before taking the first step. You don't need all the details. You just need to trust him with the next one.
