Who's Really Leading You? The Fruit of Your Life Has the Answer

Meta Description: The fruit of your life reveals who's truly leading you. Discover what the Holy Spirit wants to produce in you and how to invite His full takeover. What if the most honest answer to the question "Am I really a Christian?" isn't found in what you believe — but in what your life is producing?

That's the question I've been sitting with all week, and it's the question I want to explore with you today as we continue our series on the Holy Spirit.

A Math Equation That Will Change How You Read Scripture

As I was preparing this message, I kept coming back to one verse. Romans 8:14 says: "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

Simple enough, right? But here's where it gets interesting. If A equals B, then B equals A. So let's play with that equation for a moment.

All who are led by the Spirit are sons of God. That means all who are sons of God are led by the Spirit. Flip it again: all who are not led by the Spirit are not sons of God. And all who are not sons of God are not led by the Spirit.

I'm not saying this to judge anyone. I'm saying it to challenge all of us — including myself. Because the fruit of your life is the clearest evidence of who is actually leading you.

The Holy Spirit Has Been There All Along

Before we talk about fruit, I want you to understand just how present and powerful the Holy Spirit is — and has always been.

In Genesis 1:2, the Spirit of God hovered over creation. He empowered Samson, David, and Daniel. He moved through the prophets who wrote the very scriptures we still study today. He overshadowed Mary at the conception of Jesus. He anointed Jesus at his baptism, led him through the wilderness, and empowered him for miracles and ministry.

And after the death of Christ? The Bible says the Spirit of God entered that tomb and breathed life back into Jesus.

Think about that. The same Spirit who hovered over creation, who empowered every miracle in the Old Testament, who raised Jesus from the dead — that is the Spirit who wants to dwell in you and lead you as a child of God.

My response to that is simple: Yes, please. Welcome, Holy Spirit.

Good Fruit, Bad Fruit, and the Binary We Can't Avoid

In Galatians 5, Paul lays out two very different kinds of fruit — and he's writing to Christians.

The fruit of the flesh includes sexual immorality, jealousy, fits of anger, divisions, envy, and things like these. The fruit of the Spirit? "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." (Galatians 5:22-23)

Here's something I love about that passage: Paul doesn't say fruits of the Spirit — he says fruit, singular. Like an apple that has a peel, a core, seeds, and a stem — it's all one fruit with many parts. You can't just pick the one you like and ignore the rest. We're called to the whole thing.

And here's the binary I want you to sit with: you are either led by your flesh or led by the Spirit. There's no shared custody here. No 65/35 split where Jesus gets most of you but you keep a little for yourself. The fruit of your life will tell the truth about who's actually in charge.

Three Things I'm Asking You to Do This Week

First, start with yourself. Pray the prayer David prayed in Psalm 139: "Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. See if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." This is a dangerous prayer — but it's a good one. Ask the Lord to show you where your life is bearing bad fruit.

Second, ask someone in your church community to be honest with you. This is exactly why small groups matter so much to me. James 5:16 says, "Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." Send a text this week. Get coffee with someone. Ask them: Do you see areas in my life that don't bear good fruit? Are there blind spots I need to address? Give someone permission to speak truth into your life.

Third, invite the Holy Spirit to do a full takeover. Ephesians 5:18 says, "Be filled with the Spirit." Not just saved by the Spirit — filled. Paul says, "Don't get drunk on wine… but be filled with the Spirit." Nothing should intoxicate us but the presence of God.

Pray it out loud today: Welcome, Holy Spirit. Fill me. Lead me. Take over every part of who I am.

Fruit Takes Time — But It Will Come

Here's my encouragement as I close: repentance can happen in a moment, but fruit takes time. Jesus said it himself in John 15:4-5: "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

Stay with Jesus. Abide in him. And I promise you — the fruit will come.

God has more for you. I genuinely believe that. And it starts with one simple, daily prayer: Welcome, Holy Spirit.
