Who Do You Trust? Rooting Your Life in God When the Heat Is On

There's an old game show question that has stayed with me this week, and I think it's one of the most important questions any of us will ever answer: Who do you trust?

The show by that name aired in the late 1950s, with a young Johnny Carson as its host. Contestants had to decide whether to answer a question themselves or trust someone else to do it. The stakes were money. But in real life, the stakes are far greater. When the heat of circumstances closes in around us, or when a season of spiritual drought leaves us feeling empty and far from God, the question isn't about winning a game show. It's about where we anchor our lives.

A Picture Worth a Thousand Words

This past Sunday, I shared from Jeremiah 17:7-8, and I want to bring those words to you again here, because they paint one of the most vivid pictures in all of Scripture:

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is in the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green and is not anxious in the year of the drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

God is speaking to the nation of Judah through the prophet Jeremiah, but His words reach right across the centuries to us today. In this passage, I see two specific ways that those who trust in the Lord are blessed — and both of them speak directly to things we all face.

When the Heat Comes, You Won't Wither

We all know what it feels like when life turns up the temperature. Circumstances pile up. Pressures mount. The battles get intense. And in those moments, our instinct is to find a way out — to get out of the kitchen, as the old saying goes.

But here's the truth: sometimes we can't escape the heat. We can't always find the cool, shaded room. Life doesn't give us that option. And God doesn't always cool things off for us either. What He does promise is something better — He gives us what we need to get through it.

As Jesus said in John 7:38, "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." When our roots are sunk deep into the living water that Christ provides, the heat doesn't destroy us. We don't wither. We stay green.

The question worth sitting with is this: How deep are your spiritual roots right now? Because the heat will come. It always does. And it's only when those roots are in Christ that we can withstand it.

When Drought Arrives, You Don't Have to Panic

The second blessing Jeremiah describes is just as powerful. When the drought comes — and he's talking about spiritual drought, those seasons when God feels distant and our prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling — we don't have to be anxious.

I've known people who have walked through genuinely terrible seasons of pain and loss and uncertainty. And I've watched some of them do something remarkable: they stayed fruitful. Even while they were suffering, they were a blessing to others. That's not human strength. That is what deep roots produce.

Proverbs 12:3 puts it plainly: "No one is established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will never be moved."

Spiritual droughts are serious. They're real. But they don't have to be fatal — not when your roots are drawing from the living water of God and His Word.

So, Who Do You Trust?

It all comes back to that question. When the heat rises in your life, what are you leaning on? When the drought sets in and everything feels dry and empty, where do you turn?

Are you trusting in yourself? In what someone else says? In circumstances to eventually improve on their own?

Or are you trusting in God?

I want to be honest with you — I'm not preaching something I haven't needed myself. We all face these seasons. I will continue to face them. But I can tell you with confidence that the only one we can truly trust is God. He is the stream beside which we are planted. He is the source of the living water our roots need.

My prayer for all of us this week comes straight from what I prayed on Sunday: Lord, help us to be faithful. Help us to live for You. Help us to keep our roots deep in Your living water, so that when the heat comes and the drought sets in, we will not wither — and we will not stop bearing fruit.
