Who's Your Daddy? Discovering What It Really Means to Be a Child of God

Meta Description: What if your biggest problem isn't your circumstances, but that you've forgotten who your Father is? A Father's Day message on identity, adoption, and sonship. URL Slug: whos-your-daddy-child-of-god-identity Featured Image: A warm, sunlit image of open hands reaching upward, or a father lifting a child — evoking the themes of sonship, adoption, and belonging.

Let me ask you a question — and I need you to stay in the Bible when you answer it. Who's your daddy?

It sounds simple. But it's not a question of information. It's a question of revelation. Because the way you actually answer that question — not with your mouth, but with the way you live your life — determines everything.

Fathers Are Foundational (And Satan Knows It)

There's a reason fathers don't get nearly the cultural recognition that mothers do. There's a reason the gap between Mother's Day spending and Father's Day spending is over ten billion dollars. There's a reason Hallmark sends out 41 million fewer Father's Day cards than Mother's Day cards. And there's a reason a famous prison campaign that sent Mother's Day cards to thousands of inmates could only send five Father's Day cards.

We could chalk it up to deadbeat dads. But that's the fruit. I want to get to the root.

Fathers are foundational — and Satan knows it. If he can disrupt the foundation, he knows what happens to the house resting on it.

Think about it this way: God made over seven billion people, but he only went back to the dirt once. Everything he would need, he put in the foundation of one. The biblical definition of "father" is source, sustainer, provider, protector, teacher, leader. That's what a father is. And when the foundation is shaken, everything connected to it is affected.

This is why the biggest problem in our world isn't just social or political. It's fatherlessness. And at its core, sin itself is fatherlessness — because sin is any act that claims independence from the Father.

What Jesus Actually Came to Do

Most of us know Jesus came to save us. But the book of Galatians shows us something even deeper about why.

"But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." — Galatians 4:4-7

Notice what it says. He redeemed us so that we might receive the adoption of sons. Redemption wasn't the destination — adoption was. Jesus came to give you back your daddy.

What was really lost in the Garden of Eden wasn't heaven. You weren't in heaven to fall from it. What was lost was relationship. The moment Adam and Eve ate from that tree, they were instantaneously separated from God — the source of life itself. That's when aging, decay, and death entered the picture. They lost the kingdom because they lost the King.

So what did Jesus do? He paid the price to redeem us — and you can't adopt a child who already belongs to someone else. Jesus had to purchase our freedom first. Once he did, God could sign us. And when God adopts you, you receive the same rights as his current child. His only begotten Son. Jesus.

That makes Jesus your big brother. And it makes you a joint heir with Christ.

Stop Living Like an Orphan

Here's where it gets personal. The reason so many of us are struggling isn't because God isn't our Father. It's because we keep forgetting it.

"Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son." — Galatians 4:7

When did you ever see a child in your house come to you and say, "Please, if you don't mind, could I possibly have some bread?" No. Your children come to you with a confidence rooted in relationship. They know you. They know you'll come through. They ask and then go back to playing — because they trust you're already working on it.

That's how God wants us to come to him.

I'll be honest with you — not long ago, I was hit with a financial situation so overwhelming it nearly knocked me sideways. Before I could process it, another one hit. Then two more, all at once. I almost had a panic attack. And in that moment, I had forgotten who my Daddy is.

When I got to my prayer closet, God reminded me. And here's the best news I can give you about the question of how God is going to work it all out: it's not your business how he's going to do it. You don't need to know how. You just need to know who.

We keep spelling "how" wrong. We put the H at the beginning. The W goes at the beginning — who. You don't need to know how. You just need to know who.

He'll Show Up for His Name's Sake

I want to close with something from Psalm 106 that absolutely wrecked me in the best way.

"We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly... they provoked him at the sea, even at the Red Sea. Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known." — Psalm 106:6-8

He didn't save them because they repented perfectly. He didn't save them because they earned it. He saved them for his name's sake.

When you're carrying God's name and you're going through something hard — even when you haven't walked with him the way you should have — he looks at you and he sees his name on the line. He says, I can't let you make me look like I'm not a good Father. And he swoops in.

That means you can jump in, feet first, into whatever God is calling you to do — not because your name is on the line, but because his is.

So let me ask you one more time. Not as a taunt, but as an invitation.

Who's your daddy?

Because if God is your Father, you have no reason to live like an orphan another day.

If this message stirred something in you, I'd love for you to watch the full sermon and share it with someone who needs to be reminded who their Father is. And if you've never made that decision to come home to God — it's not too late. He's standing there with open arms, not a list of your mistakes. Just come home.
