Love Is the Invincible Weapon: What Forgiveness Really Does to Your Enemies

Meta Description: What if forgiveness wasn't just about letting go — but about stepping into an undefeatable force? One woman's story changed everything. What would you do if the person responsible for your child's death asked for your forgiveness? Most of us hope we never have to answer that question. But this past Sunday, I sat across from a woman who did — and her answer will challenge everything you think you know about forgiveness.

A Story That Left Us Speechless

I had the privilege of interviewing Sister Sonia Spencer during our Sunday service. In 1995, six armed men invaded her home, held her family at gunpoint, and ultimately took her seven-month-old daughter hostage. During a high-speed police chase, the car carrying her baby crashed — and her daughter did not survive. All six men were convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

For years afterward, Sonia wrote letters to all six of them — not with forgiveness at first, but with pain. She wanted them to feel what she felt. Only one of them ever wrote back.

Then God began to deal with her heart.

She told me that during a sermon series on forgiveness, she heard God speak to her so clearly and so loudly that she actually turned around to see if someone was standing behind her. The message was unmistakable: You have to forgive them.

Over time, she wrote all six of them again. This time, the letter began: I forgive you.

What Forgiveness Actually Is

Here's what I want you to understand — and this is something I believe with everything in me: forgiveness is one of the greatest true acts of love we can offer.

And love is not something God merely has. The Bible says God is love (1 John 4). There's a world of difference between those two statements. If God is love, then everywhere I see the word "God" in Scripture, I can insert the word "love" and the text remains true.

That means John 3:16 reads like this: "For love so loved the world that love gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Stay with me. If Jesus is the Son of God, and God is love, then Jesus is love in human form. And here's the implication that changes everything: you cannot genuinely believe in Jesus — who is love — and refuse to operate in love. It's a contradiction at the core.

When Sonia chose to forgive, she wasn't just releasing six men from her bitterness. She was stepping inside of God himself.

The Invincible Force Field of Love

Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment in John 13:34-35:

"A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

The disciples wanted a banner — something visible they could carry to show the world who they were. Jesus told them the most powerful banner they could carry wasn't a symbol or a name. It was love.

And here's why: when you walk in love, you insert yourself into God. The enemy is no longer attacking you — he's attacking the God you've placed yourself inside of. Whatever he throws at you has to go through God first.

That's not weakness. That's the most powerful position you can occupy.

We see this proved in the life of the Apostle John — the disciple Jesus loved, the one who leaned on Jesus's chest, the one Jesus trusted with the care of his own mother. Every other disciple was martyred in brutal ways. They tried to crucify John. They tried feeding him to lions. They even boiled him. He outlived them all. You simply cannot kill love.

When Forgiveness Walks It Out

Here's what moved me most about Sonia's story. God didn't just tell her to forgive. He told her to walk in her forgiveness. She didn't know what that meant at first. But obedience revealed the path.

That forgiveness led her to advocate for Kenyan — the driver of that car — before a judge who initially refused to even hear the case. Sonia sat down with that judge, knee to knee, and told him everything. The judge reconsidered. Kenyan was resentenced. He walked out of prison after 30 years, and he sat right beside Sonia on our stage Sunday as a free man and a changed one.

She didn't just forgive the man connected to her daughter's death. She became his intercessor.

Joseph's story in Scripture mirrors this exactly. Sold into slavery, falsely accused, forgotten in prison — at every turn it looked like he was losing. But he kept rising. The proof that he held no bitterness toward his brothers wasn't just what he said years later in Egypt. It was that God kept blessing him along the way, even in the pit, even in the prison.

When you walk in love, you take the outcome out of your enemy's hands and put it in God's. And God always causes you to come out on top — even if it takes longer than you expected.

Your Next Step

Whatever you're facing right now — whatever hurt, betrayal, or wound you've been carrying — I want to ask you a simple question: What would love do?

That is always the right answer.

If Sonia's story stirred something in you, I'd encourage you to watch the full Sunday service interview to hear it in her own words. And if you're ready to take a step toward forgiveness that you've been putting off, don't wait. Respond in love. Step into God. You cannot lose from that position.
