Walking Worthy of Your Calling: Living a Life That Reflects Christ

Have you ever stopped to consider what it means to truly live out your faith? Not just attending church on Sundays, but having your relationship with Jesus transform every aspect of your life? This past Sunday, we explored what it means to walk worthy of our calling as believers.

The Foundation of Our Walk

I began our series this year focusing on remaining faithful in every place of our lives. We've talked about being faithful in our walk—which in biblical terms simply means how we live, how we conduct ourselves, and what we do daily.

In Ephesians, the first three chapters tell us what God has done for our salvation, while chapters four through six tell us how we are to respond and live in Christ. This is such a crucial distinction that I want to make absolutely clear:

You don't walk to get salvation. You walk because of salvation.

We don't walk worthy to earn our calling; we walk worthy because of what Christ has already done. Our obedience flows from gratitude, not obligation.

What Has God Done For Us?

Before Paul urges us to walk worthy, he reminds us of everything God has already done:

1. He made us alive. We were dead in sin, held captive by it. But God made us living souls for Him.

2. He raised us to be part of His family. "He raised us as adoptive sons and daughters." Nothing compares to being chosen by God, being allowed to be called His children.

3. He saved us by grace through faith. We can't earn it. We don't deserve it. We don't even keep ourselves saved—He keeps us in Him.

4. He sealed us with the Holy Spirit. I see the Holy Spirit as a centurion standing guard at the gate of my soul. Satan can't get me because there's a guard posted who is always more powerful than anything that comes against me.

In Ephesians 4:1-6, Paul writes: "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

The Personality of a Worthy Walk

Paul gives us specific characteristics that should mark our walk:

1. Humility

Humility isn't thinking less of yourself—it's thinking of yourself less. It's putting Christ first, then others, then yourself. Anything good that happens through us is by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. We can't take credit for it because it's all Him.

2. Gentleness

Gentleness is strength under control. It's not weakness, but power that is restrained and bridled. A faithful walk does not demand its rights. When we become children of God, we surrender our rights to Him.

3. Patience

Patience is always tested by people, not circumstances. We must learn to endure difficulties and obstacles for a period of time for His glory.

4. Bearing One Another in Love

We must choose to love one another, especially when it's difficult. Sometimes love takes endurance. Sometimes you have to choose to love people through things that get under your skin.

The Priority of Unity

The priority of our walk is unity. Jesus prayed for only one thing for His church—that we would be unified as He and the Father are one.

"Endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." This means unity must be intentional. It doesn't just happen—we have to work at it. An obedient walk is never meant to be a solo act. It's like a church choir—there's no room for soloists in the body. We need each other.

We protect unity by:

• Refusing to listen to gossip
• Refusing to repeat gossip
• Refusing to take sides
• Being unified in the gospel of Jesus Christ

What Does a Worthy Walk Look Like Today?

A life that walks worthy of our calling:

1. Reflects Christ's character - We don't ask what Jesus would do; we do what Jesus would do.

2. Protects Christ's church - We stand guard for one another, bear each other's burdens, cry together, laugh together, rejoice together, hurt together.

3. Honors His calling - We are called to be light in a dark world, salt in a decaying world, and a testimony in a hopeless world.

Remember, a worthy walk isn't measured by your visibility, but by your humility. Not by your position, but by your unity. Not by your talent, but by your love.

The question we must all answer is this: Is Christ evident in your life? Can others see Jesus in how you live each day?
