Defeating Discouragement When You're Doing God's Work

Have you ever felt called to do something meaningful for God, only to face obstacle after obstacle? Maybe you started with enthusiasm, but then criticism, setbacks, or self-doubt began to creep in. I've been there too. This past Sunday, as we continued our journey through Nehemiah, we discovered powerful truths about facing and defeating discouragement when we're trying to do what God has called us to do.

The Enemy Always Opposes God's Work

Whenever you move forward to do something for God, your enemy wants to stop you. This isn't just theory—Jesus himself taught us that our spiritual enemy's mission is to "steal, kill, and destroy" (John 10:10). He "roams around like a lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

Nehemiah experienced this firsthand. After giving up his comfortable position in the Persian palace and traveling a thousand miles to rebuild Jerusalem's walls, he immediately faced opposition. It would have been easy to assume that because Nehemiah sacrificed so much and had pure motives, everything would go smoothly. But that's not how spiritual warfare works.

The truth is, it's always going to be hard to do the right thing. Not because God is opposing you, but because the enemy is.

How Your Enemy Will Discourage You

1. Discouragement from the Outside

In Nehemiah 4:1-3, we see how Nehemiah's enemies tried to stop God's work through ridicule:

"When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, 'What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?'"

Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, "What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!"

How many times as believers do we stay silent about our faith because we're afraid someone might make fun of us? We keep our Christianity a secret while others proudly advertise their beliefs and lifestyles. That doesn't make sense! We should never be ashamed to be identified with Christ.

If you give up every time somebody criticizes you, you'll never accomplish anything significant. Anytime you attempt something great, somebody will say you're not good enough. But playing it safe and only doing what won't be criticized isn't the life God has for you.

2. Discouragement from the Inside

Even more dangerous is when discouragement comes from within. Nehemiah 4:10 reveals: "Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, 'The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.'"

Sometimes we're our own worst enemy. We talk ourselves out of doing something great that God could use us for. The fear of failure prevents us from even trying. You hear that voice saying, "You can't do that. You're not talented enough. You're not strong enough. You're not qualified."

When you step out in faith to do something for God, you'll face opposition—not because you're doing the wrong thing, but because you're doing the right thing. The enemy wants to stop the work God wants to do through His people.

How to Defeat Discouragement

Nehemiah gives us a powerful strategy for overcoming discouragement in chapter 4:14:

"After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.'"

1. Remember the Lord

When you're discouraged, overwhelmed, or feeling incapable, remember who God is. Remember what He's done in the past. This is the same God who delivered Israel from Egypt, parted the Red Sea, provided manna in the desert, and raised Jesus from the dead!

When I focus on myself, I get scared and think, "I'm not good enough." But when I focus my attention on God and remember His faithfulness, my discouragement disappears. As Romans 8:31 reminds us, "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

2. Fight for Your Cause

Notice that Nehemiah doesn't say "fight for yourself." He says fight for your brothers, sons, daughters, wives, and homes. It's more motivating to fight for others than for ourselves.

What cause has God put on your heart? Maybe it's helping orphans in another country. Maybe it's fighting human trafficking. Or maybe it starts closer to home—fighting for your marriage or your children who are straying from God's path.

You don't need to change the entire world. Barbara, a woman from our church, felt called to help one brilliant young man in Kenya attend medical school. That one act of obedience not only changed his life but led to free medical care for an entire community when he later returned with his medical colleagues to serve his hometown.

Living a Life That Makes a Difference

The world wasn't changed because of Nehemiah, but an entire city was transformed because one ordinary person built a wall. The people were protected. They were no longer in danger.

God isn't looking for extraordinary people with special talents. He's looking for ordinary people willing to trust Him and step out in faith. You might not even be sure what God wants you to do, but you can start by asking: "What do I have a passion for? How can I make this world a better place?"

Remember, greatness isn't just making a decision to do something significant. It's having the unwillingness to give up when obstacles come. When you focus on God rather than your circumstances and fight for causes bigger than yourself, you can defeat discouragement and accomplish what God has called you to do.
