Present Groans, Future Glory

Romans 8:18-27 Discussion Guide

OVERVIEW

In this sermon from Romans 8:18-27, we explore how Christian suffering has divine purpose. While we experience suffering in this present life, we're assured that our future glory far outweighs our current pain. Creation, believers, and even the Holy Spirit groan together as we eagerly await the final redemption and restoration promised in Christ.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Icebreaker: If your life right now had its own weather forecast, what would it be? (Sunny with a chance of chaos? Scattered showers of blessings? High pressure system?)

  2. The pastor compared our suffering to childbirth - painful but purposeful. What's something difficult you've endured in your marriage that eventually produced something beautiful?

  3. Romans 8:18 says our present sufferings aren't worth comparing with future glory. How does this perspective help when you're in the middle of a challenging season with your spouse or kids?

  4. The sermon highlighted how creation itself is "groaning." Where do you see evidence of brokenness in your family life that makes you long for Christ's return and restoration?

  5. We heard that "suffering confronts us with our need for Jesus." Share a time when family difficulties drove you to depend on God in ways that comfortable times didn't.

  6. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us "with groanings too deep for words" (v.26). How might knowing God is that present in your pain change how you support your spouse when they're struggling?

PRAYER FOCUS (5-10 minutes)

Break into pairs or small groups and pray for each other in these areas:

  • For comfort and strength in current suffering
  • For the Holy Spirit's help when we don't know how to pray
  • For renewed hope and eager anticipation of Christ's return
  • For patience in waiting and endurance in trials
  • For the ability to see our suffering through the lens of God's promises

OPTIONAL DEEP DIVE

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 and 1 Peter 1:3-7. How do these passages complement what Paul is teaching in Romans 8:18-27? What additional insights do they provide about suffering and future glory?

  2. The sermon mentioned that suffering not only confronts us with our need for Jesus but also "conforms us into the image of Jesus" (connecting to Romans 8:29). What specific Christlike qualities might God be developing in you through your current struggles?

  3. How does the hope of bodily resurrection and creation's restoration (verses 21-23) challenge or enhance your understanding of heaven and eternity?

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE

Choose one specific struggle you're facing. Each day this week, practice reframing it by:

  1. Acknowledging the pain honestly in prayer
  2. Thanking God for His presence with you in it
  3. Expressing trust in His purposes even when you can't see them
  4. Declaring your hope in future glory that will far outweigh this present suffering

"For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory." (2 Corinthians 4:17)
