New Beginnings: Stop Looking Back and Start Moving Forward

Have you ever found yourself stuck staring in the rearview mirror of life? Replaying old mistakes, mourning what used to be, or wondering if your best days are already behind you? I think most of us have been there — and I want to tell you today that God has something to say about that.

This past Sunday, we dug into a message I'm calling "New Beginnings: Looking Forward, Not Backward." And I believe with everything in me that this message is for someone reading these words right now.

God Is Doing Something New — Are You Ready to See It?

I love the image of a gardener in spring. A good gardener doesn't stand over last year's dead plants and weeds, paralyzed by what didn't grow. They turn the soil, plant new seeds, and expect something beautiful to come up.

That's exactly the picture God paints in Isaiah 43:18–19:

"Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."

Roads in the wilderness. Rivers in the desert. That's God saying, "You have no idea what I'm capable of when you stop looking behind you and start trusting what's ahead." He doesn't just patch up the old — He creates something entirely new.

The Past Can Teach You, But It Doesn't Have to Trap You

The Apostle Paul understood this better than almost anyone. Before his conversion, Paul was responsible for the persecution and death of countless Christians. That's a past that could have — and probably should have — destroyed him. Instead, he became one of the most influential voices for the Gospel in all of history.

In Philippians 3:13–14, Paul writes:

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Paul didn't pretend his past didn't happen. He simply refused to let it define his future. And here's the thing — God can use your story, your struggles, even your worst chapters, to push you toward the very purpose He designed you for.

Don't ever give up on yourself. And don't ever give up on the people around you, either.

Salvation Isn't Self-Improvement — It's Transformation

There's a difference between trying to do better and being made new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 puts it plainly:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

I think about the prodigal son. He hit rock bottom — and for a Jewish young man in that era, feeding pigs was about as low as it gets. But when he finally came to his senses and turned back toward home, his father didn't just stand in the doorway waiting. His father ran to him.

That's the heart of God toward you. No matter what you've done, no matter how far you've wandered — He's not standing with arms crossed. He's running. And when you come home, heaven celebrates.

Trust God With What's Ahead — You Don't Need All the Answers

One of my favorite illustrations for this is a puzzle. When you're working a puzzle, not every piece makes sense right away. Sometimes you set a piece aside because you can't figure out where it belongs — and then later, after you've worked another section, that piece fits perfectly. You couldn't have known where it went until you got there.

Life is like that. God is like that. He doesn't make mistakes, and He doesn't put extra pieces in the box.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

You don't have to have everything figured out to take the next step. You just have to trust the One who holds the whole picture.

Step Forward With Courage

Finally — and this is where the rubber meets the road — we have to actually move. Faith isn't just a feeling; it's a step.

Joshua 1:9 says:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

All through Scripture, God tells His people: Don't be afraid. Not because there's nothing scary, but because He is with you in the middle of it. Whatever dark season you're walking through right now, God hasn't left. And if you look back honestly at the hardest things you've survived, I'd be willing to bet you can see His fingerprints all over how you got through.

3. Take one courageous step forward — even a small one — trusting that God is directing your path.

The Father is already running toward you.
