This small group discussion guide draws directly from Jeremy Wood's sermon “United for Mission” so you can keep engaging with the message all week. Read, reflect, and share it with your small group or friends.
Small Group Discussion Guide
"United for Mission"
OPENING PRAYER
Lord, thank You for bringing us together as one body in Christ. As we gather to discuss what it means to be united for Your mission, open our hearts to Your Word. Help us move beyond just hearing to truly doing what You've called us to. May our unity become the platform where You command Your blessing and release Your power through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
ICEBREAKER
Unity in Action: Share a time when you were part of a team or group that accomplished something significant because everyone worked together in unity. What made that unity possible? How did it feel to be part of something bigger than yourself?
SCRIPTURE FOCUS
Have different group members read these passages aloud:
- Psalm 133:1-3
- Acts 2:42-47
- Ephesians 4:3-6
- John 17:20-23
Discussion Starter: What stands out to you most from these passages about unity? What connection do you see between unity and God's power or blessing?
MAIN DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Unity as a Platform: Pastor emphasized that "unity is not the goal; unity is the platform." What's the difference between seeing unity as the end goal versus seeing it as a platform? How does this shift in perspective change how we approach unity in the church?
Spiritual Reality vs. Practical Experience: The sermon pointed out that unity already exists spiritually for believers before we experience it practically. In what areas do you think our church family is living out this spiritual unity well? Where might we need to grow in practically experiencing the unity we already have in Christ?
Protecting Unity: Pastor identified three practical commitments for protecting unity: refusing to gossip, extending quick forgiveness, and focusing on essentials. Which of these three is most challenging for you personally? Why?
Unity Under Pressure: Think about a time when unity in a relationship or group was tested under pressure. What determined whether that unity strengthened or fractured? What lessons did you learn?
Unity and Mission: Acts 2 shows how the early church's unity became a platform for God's power, favor, and impact. How have you seen unity (or disunity) affect our church's mission effectiveness? What might be possible if we experienced deeper unity?
Being Doers, Not Just Hearers: James 1:22 calls us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. What's one specific way you could move from simply agreeing with the importance of unity to actively building and protecting it this week?
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Take a few minutes for silent, individual reflection on these questions:
- Is there anyone in our church family I need to forgive or reconcile with?
- In what ways might I be contributing to disunity without realizing it?
- What personal preference or opinion might I need to surrender for the sake of our church's unity and mission?
- How am I currently using my words—to build up the body or to tear it down?
GROUP ACTIVITY: "Building the Body"
Materials needed: Large sheets of paper, markers, and sticky notes
Draw a simple outline of a human body on the large paper.
Give each person several sticky notes.
Have everyone write on their sticky notes:
- Specific strengths/gifts they see in other group members (write the person's name)
- Ways they've seen unity demonstrated in your church
- Barriers to unity they've observed or experienced
- Ideas for strengthening unity in your church
Place the sticky notes on the body outline:
- Strengths/gifts near the hands
- Unity examples near the heart
- Barriers near the feet
- Ideas for strengthening near the head
Discuss what you see. How do the various parts work together? What patterns emerge? What surprises you?
End by having the group circle around the "body" and each person pray a one-sentence prayer for unity in your church.
CLOSING PRAYER
"Father, we echo Jesus' prayer that we would be one as He and You are one. Forgive us for the times we've prioritized our preferences over Your purposes. Help us protect the unity of Your Spirit through the bond of peace. Make us one body, one mission, one heart. Let our unity become the platform where You command Your blessing and release Your power. What obedience began, let unity multiply. In Jesus' name, Amen."
TAKE-HOME CHALLENGE
Choose ONE of the following commitments to focus on this week:
Unity Check: Each day this week, pause before speaking about another person and ask yourself: "Will these words build unity or create division?" Choose to speak only what builds up.
Reconciliation Step: If there's someone you need to reconcile with, take a concrete step toward healing that relationship this week. Reach out, apologize, or have that difficult conversation you've been avoiding.
Unity Prayer Partner: Find one person to pray with specifically for unity in our church. Meet (in person or virtually) at least once this week to pray together.
Mission Connection: Identify one way you can participate in our church's mission this month. Remember, we are united not to be comfortable but to be sent.
Share your commitment with one other person in the group for accountability, and be prepared to share what happened when you gather next week.
"What obedience began, unity will multiply."
