You Are Here: Discovering Your True Address in God's Master Plan

A reflection on Pastor Amos's opening message in our new Ephesians series

There are moments in a sermon when you realize the message wasn't just prepared for a congregation — it was prepared for you, right where you are. This past Sunday felt like one of those mornings.

As our new pastor, Amos, launched what promises to be a life-changing series through the book of Ephesians, he opened with a question most of us quietly carry: Do I really know who I am in Christ? What followed was one of the most beautifully layered, theologically rich, and genuinely accessible messages many of us have heard in a long time.

Setting the Stage: Why Ephesians Matters

Before diving into the text, Pastor Amos gave us something priceless — context. He walked us through the remarkable, often dangerous story of the church at Ephesus: a thriving commercial city steeped in occult worship, where the Apostle Paul planted a church, faced a mob of 25,000 cult members in an ancient theater, and poured years of his life into a people he deeply loved.

He helped us see that Paul wrote this letter as an older man, chained to a Roman guard in prison, writing to a church he knew might be drifting — not from doctrine, but from devotion. In Revelation 2, Jesus himself would later tell this same church: "You have left your first love."

That historical grounding wasn't just background information. It was a mirror. Pastor Amos gently noted that churches — and individual believers — can go through seasons of transition and still lose sight of their identity in Christ. The entire series, he told us, is about being found — found in who God says we are.

God's Master Plan: A Sweeping, Beautiful Blueprint

Pastor Amos described the opening 14 verses of Ephesians as "the Sound of Music opening" of the letter — a sweeping, cinematic, heavenly perspective on God's grand design. And once he began unpacking it, that description made perfect sense.

He read from Ephesians 1:1-14, with particular focus on these foundational verses:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love." — Ephesians 1:3-4

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence." — Ephesians 1:7-8

"In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." — Ephesians 1:13-14

From these verses, Pastor Amos drew out five movements of God's master plan — each one more encouraging than the last.

You Have Two Addresses

One of the most memorable insights from Sunday's message was Pastor Amos's observation about Paul's dual address. Paul writes to the saints "at Ephesus" — their physical location — but also to the faithful "in Christ Jesus" — their spiritual address.

Paul himself was writing from a Roman prison. Yet he wrote with overflowing joy. Why? Because no matter what his physical circumstances looked like, his spiritual address never changed. He was in Christ.

Pastor Amos challenged us: Stop defining your life by your physical circumstances. Your bank account, your past mistakes, your current struggles — those are not your primary address. If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, your primary residence is in Christ. And that address cannot be foreclosed on, evicted, or taken away.

Chosen, Adopted, Redeemed, and Sealed

Working carefully through the passage, Pastor Amos unpacked four breathtaking realities that belong to every believer:

Chosen — Before the foundation of the world, God chose Christ as the redeemer. And everyone who is found in Christ shares in that choosing. As he put it clearly: "God doesn't randomly elect people. God elected his Son, Jesus. And whoever chooses his Son, God also chooses them."

Adopted — Using the backdrop of Roman law, Pastor Amos illuminated why Paul's use of "adoption" was so powerful. In Roman culture, an adopted child often had a more secure claim to an inheritance than a natural-born child — because the adopted one was chosen. That's the picture God paints for us. You are not merely tolerated. You are not just forgiven. You are accepted. The Greek word Paul uses — charitoo — means "highly favored." When God looks at you through the lens of his Son, he sees Christ, and he says: yes.

Redeemed — Pastor Amos painted a vivid picture of the slave market of sin. Every person, he reminded us, once stood on that auction block with no hope and no way out. Then Jesus walked in, presented the receipt of his own blood, and said: "This one's mine." That is redemption. And it is offered, he emphasized, "according to the riches of his grace" — not a small portion doled out carefully, but the full, unlimited vastness of God's grace, available to every soul.

Sealed — The Holy Spirit is not a bonus feature of the Christian life. He is God's earnest — a financial term meaning down payment or guarantee. Pastor Amos put it beautifully: "The Holy Spirit is the engagement ring that proves God is coming back to finish the transaction." He is proof that you belong to God, and proof that God is not finished with you yet.

Three Calls to Action

Pastor Amos closed with three clear, practical challenges that sent us home with more than just good feelings:

1. Shift your identity address. Stop living as though your past, your failures, or your circumstances define you. Your billing address is in Christ. When the enemy brings an old debt to your door, remind him — it's already been paid.

2. Grab the rope. For anyone who hasn't yet placed their trust in Jesus, the rescue is already in the water. God's sovereignty doesn't override your responsibility. You have heard the truth. The choice is yours. As Paul writes in Romans 10:13: "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

3. Rest in the earnest. For the believer who feels forgotten, overlooked, or like God has gone quiet — look at the seal. The Holy Spirit dwelling in you is God's promise that the Master Architect is still on site. He never starts a building he doesn't intend to finish.

A Message for Every Season

What made Sunday's message so compelling wasn't just the theological depth — though there was plenty of it. It was Pastor Amos's evident love for the people he's been called to serve, and his gift for making ancient truths feel urgently, personally relevant. Whether you're in a season of change, carrying the weight of your past, or simply wondering if God's plan still has a place for you — this message was an answer.

The blueprint is real. The Architect is faithful. And your address in Christ is secure.
