You Are Not Your Own: Why That Changes Everything

Have you ever heard someone say, "It's my life — I can do what I want"? It sounds like freedom. But what if the greatest freedom you'll ever experience comes from discovering the exact opposite is true?

This past Sunday, I shared a message that I believe has the power to reshape how you see yourself, your body, and your relationship with God. It all comes down to one verse that I think most of us have read without fully letting it land.

What Paul Said That Should Stop Us in Our Tracks

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul writes:

"What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

Read that again slowly. Your body is already the temple of the Holy Ghost. Not "will be someday if you get it together." Right now. And because of that, Paul says plainly: you are not your own.

I know that can sound restrictive. But here's what I want you to see — it's actually the most liberating truth in Scripture.

The Body and the Head Cannot Be Separated

One of the most important things I unpacked Sunday was this: Jesus is the Head of the Church, and we are His body. Paul makes this crystal clear in Ephesians 1:22-23, where he writes that God "gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body."

Here's a simple question I asked the congregation: Can your head do anything without your body? Of course not. A head without a body is helpless.

And here's the staggering implication — whatever Jesus wants to do on this earth, He does through us. His church. His body. That means when you show up, pray, serve, and live in obedience, you are literally the instrument through which the Head of the Church moves in the world.

This is why prayer matters so much. In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus said, "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest."

He's not going to force laborers into the field. He asks us to pray. Because nothing happens in heaven until something happens here on earth.

Praying in the Spirit Covers What We Don't Know

I shared a remarkable story Sunday about a missionary in Africa who was surrounded by hostile warriors in the middle of the night — and was miraculously protected when two angelic figures appeared beside him as he stepped out of his hut. What he discovered later was that a fellow missionary had been awakened at that exact hour, burdened to pray, and had interceded in the Spirit for an hour and a half — not even knowing what she was praying for.

That story illustrates what Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 14:2 and 14 — that when we pray in the Spirit, our spirit is praying mysteries, divine secrets, things our natural understanding cannot access. "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful."

Praying in the Spirit is one of the ways God covers the gaps — the situations we don't know about, the needs we can't articulate. It builds us up spiritually, like charging a battery, so we're ready for whatever God calls us to walk into.

Glorifying God in Your Body Is Practical, Not Just Spiritual

Here's where I did a little meddling Sunday — and I make no apologies for it.

If your body is the temple of the living God, then the question you need to ask about your choices, your habits, your appearance, and your conduct is simply this: Does this glorify God?

Paul told young Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12 to "be an example" — in his manner of life, his conduct, his words. We represent Someone. We carry the presence of the living God wherever we go. That ought to shape how we dress, how we carry ourselves, and what we do with our bodies.

In 2 Corinthians 6:16, Paul writes: "Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

The living God dwells in you. He walks in you. That's not a small thing.

You Belong to Him — and That's Good News

Some folks might hear "you are not your own" and feel the weight of obligation. I want you to hear it differently. You belong to the God who is good, who gives good gifts, who heals, who delivers, who sends angels when warriors surround you in the night.

Matthew 7:11 says: "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

He wants to give you good things. He wants to work through you. He wants to live in you and walk in you. You don't have to perform for that — you simply have to recognize who you already are and live accordingly.

So let me invite you to say it out loud, right where you are: I am not my own. I am bought with a price. I belong to Him. I am the temple of the living God.

Now live like it.
