OPENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for gathering us together as a community of believers. We invite your Holy Spirit to be present among us today—not just as a gentle presence, but as the powerful, transforming force we see in Scripture. Open our hearts to hear your voice, empower our words to speak your truth, and deepen our relationships with you and each other. In Jesus' name, amen.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION

Wind and Fire: The Holy Spirit is described using powerful symbols like wind and fire in Acts 2. If you had to choose either a mighty wind or a blazing fire to represent your personality, which would you choose and why?

Alternate Option: Share about a time when you felt empowered to do something you didn't think you could do on your own. What gave you that power?

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

Have someone read Acts 2:1-5 aloud:

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven."

1. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us in Community

• The disciples were "all together in one place" when the Holy Spirit came. Why do you think God chose to pour out His Spirit when they were gathered together rather than when they were alone?

• Our pastor mentioned that when people drift from God, they often drift from church first. Have you observed this pattern in your own life or in others? What makes community so essential to our spiritual health?

• How has being part of this small group helped you experience God's presence in ways you might not have on your own?

2. The Holy Spirit Comes with Undeniable Power

• Our pastor suggested that we sometimes "domesticate" the Holy Spirit, turning Him into a tame presence rather than acknowledging His power. In what ways might you have unintentionally domesticated the Holy Spirit in your life?

• The Holy Spirit's arrival was described as a "violent wind" and "tongues of fire" – not subtle signs! When have you experienced the Holy Spirit's power in an undeniable way?

• What areas of your life do you need to surrender to allow the Holy Spirit's disruptive, transforming power to work?

3. The Holy Spirit Fills Every Believer

• The passage says "ALL of them were filled with the Holy Spirit." How does it make you feel to know that the Holy Spirit isn't just for "super-spiritual" people but for every believer, including you?

• Our pastor mentioned church hurt and how some people have been made to feel like "second-class Christians." Has religious judgment ever made you question your standing with God? How does this passage speak to that experience?

• What barriers might be preventing you from fully embracing the Holy Spirit's presence in your life?

4. The Holy Spirit Empowers Our Witness

• The immediate result of the Holy Spirit's filling was that the disciples "began to speak." How comfortable do you feel speaking about Jesus to others? What holds you back?

• Our pastor said, "You can have the Holy Spirit without speaking about Jesus, but you can't speak effectively about Jesus without the Holy Spirit." Do you agree? Why or why not?

• Think about your daily interactions with people who don't know Jesus. How might relying on the Holy Spirit's power change those conversations?

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Take 2-3 minutes of quiet time for everyone to reflect individually on these questions:

1. On a scale of 1-10, how much am I currently relying on the Holy Spirit's power versus my own strength in my daily life?

2. What is one specific area where I need to ask for the Holy Spirit's empowerment this week?

3. Who is one person God might be calling me to speak to about Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit?

GROUP ACTIVITY: "Spirit-Led Speaking"

Materials needed: Index cards, pens

Instructions:

1. Give each person 2-3 index cards and a pen.
2. Have everyone write down one or two challenging scenarios where they might need to speak about Jesus (examples: "When my coworker asks why I go to church" or "When my neighbor is going through a difficult time").
3. Collect all the cards, shuffle them, and place them face down in the center.
4. Take turns drawing a card and responding to the scenario.
5. After each response, the group can offer encouragement and additional ideas for how the Holy Spirit might lead someone to speak in that situation.
6. Close the activity by affirming that the Holy Spirit gives us the words to say in the moment we need them.

Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence among us today. We acknowledge our need for your power in our lives. Fill us afresh right now. Help us to stop trying to live the Christian life in our own strength. Give us boldness to speak your words to those who need to hear them. Use us as your witnesses in our homes, workplaces, schools, and community. We surrender control and invite you to work through us in powerful ways this week. In Jesus' name, amen.

TAKE-HOME CHALLENGE

Daily Spirit-Empowerment: Each morning this week, take 5 minutes to specifically ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and empower your words. Then, at the end of each day, reflect on moments when you felt the Spirit's guidance in your conversations. Journal about these experiences, noting any differences between days when you intentionally invited the Spirit's power and days when you might have forgotten.

Act in Faith: Identify one specific opportunity this week to step out in faith and speak about Jesus, relying on the Holy Spirit's power rather than your own abilities. This might be sharing your testimony, encouraging someone with Scripture, or simply mentioning how God has been working in your life. Come prepared next week to share how it went!

Community Connection: Reach out to at least one person from the group mid-week for encouragement and prayer, remembering that the Holy Spirit works powerfully when we're connected in community.

Remember: The same Holy Spirit who filled the believers at Pentecost lives in you! You don't have to speak in your own strength—His power is available to you right now.
