You Already Have What You Need: The Promise of the Holy Spirit

What if the very thing holding you back from stepping into God's mission isn't a lack of training, talent, or courage — but a misunderstanding of what Jesus actually promised you?

This past Sunday, I had the privilege of opening John chapters 13–16 together with our church family, and I want to share something that I believe has the power to completely reframe how you see yourself in God's story.

Greater Works? How Is That Even Possible?

Jesus said something that should stop us in our tracks. In John 14:12, he told his disciples: "Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do."

Greater works. Than Jesus. Let that sink in.

These were men who had watched Jesus raise the dead, cast out demons, and proclaim the Kingdom of God with authority. And yet Jesus looked them in the eye and said: greater works than these will you do.

How? Because he was about to send the Helper.

Six Promises That Change Everything

Jesus, in his final hours with his disciples before the cross, made six specific promises about the Holy Spirit. These weren't just for twelve men in an upper room two thousand years ago. They are for every believer — including you, right now.

1. The Spirit empowers your witness. In John 15:26–27, Jesus says the Spirit of truth "will bear witness about me, and you also will bear witness." When you share the gospel with a neighbor or a coworker, you are not alone. The Spirit testifies through you.

2. The Spirit convicts the world through the gospel. Jesus promises in John 16:8–11 that the Spirit "will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment." Here's what that means practically: when you go and share the truth, you're sharing it with someone whose Creator knows every thought they think and every need they have. You don't have to manufacture conviction. That's his job.

I once heard a pastor describe the mission this way: sharing the gospel is like walking into a cemetery, looking at a grave, and saying, "Get up." None of us have the power to do that. But we've been promised Someone who works through us who does. That changes everything.

3. The Spirit glorifies Christ through mission. John 16:14–15 tells us the Spirit "will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you." The Spirit doesn't draw attention to himself. He makes Christ fully known — crucified, risen, and coming again. Every act of faithful witness is the Spirit making much of Jesus.

4. The Spirit guides us to truth. Jesus says in John 16:13, "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth." This is why the Bible is not just another book. The Word of God, breathed into by the Spirit of God, is alive and active. That's why believers who have read Scripture for sixty years can still come to a familiar passage and find something fresh and life-giving. The Spirit makes it alive.

5. The Spirit expands the mission beyond what any one person could do. In John 16:7, Jesus says something shocking: "It is to your advantage that I go away." How could that possibly be true? Because if Jesus remained physically present, the mission would stay in one region. But when he ascends and sends the Spirit, the Helper indwells every believer everywhere — and the work expands from one location to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people. That's the greater works. That's Revelation 7:9 becoming reality.

6. The Spirit sustains you under pressure. Jesus warned his disciples plainly in John 15:18–20 and 16:1–4 that the world would hate them and persecution would come. But the Spirit doesn't only show up in favorable conditions. I've seen this firsthand. I know of a missionary couple — a man I'll call Jay — who was arrested along with two new believers after a baptism service in South Asia. What happened in that prison? They shared the gospel with thirty men. Three gave their lives to Christ. When the authorities separated them into different cells, there were suddenly three different cells hearing the gospel. The church outside was afraid. But the church inside the prison was on fire. Persecution didn't stop the mission. It expanded it.

You Are Already Qualified

Here's what I want you to walk away with: none of us who have gone into difficult places around the world were qualified by our education or our experience. We were qualified by these promises.

The same Spirit that fell on 120 believers in Acts 2 and launched the church into the world lives in you. The same Spirit that emboldened Peter to preach and saw 3,000 people come to faith in a single day is the Helper Jesus promised you.

You don't bring anything to the table that makes this work. He does the work through you. And because of that, every believer — across the street, across town, or across the world — is empowered for this mission.

Maybe you've been sitting back thinking, "I'm glad the qualified people can do that." I want to gently challenge that thought. Jesus didn't send the Helper only to missionaries and pastors. He sent him to whoever believes.
