You Are Not Alone on This Mission: The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Have you ever felt unqualified for something God seemed to be calling you toward? Maybe it was a conversation with a neighbor about faith, a mission trip, or simply stepping up to serve in a new way. If so, this past Sunday's message was for you.

Guest speaker Jacob Boss — Vice President of Global Engagement for the International Mission Board — brought a timely and deeply encouraging word from John 13–16, walking us through some of the most powerful promises Jesus ever made to His followers. His message was clear: the mission of God doesn't depend on our qualifications. It depends on the Helper.

The Scene Behind the Promises

To understand the weight of what Jesus said, Jacob helped us step into the room where He said it. John 13–16 captures the Last Supper — the final hours Jesus spent with His disciples before the cross. These weren't casual words. They were the most important things Jesus wanted His closest followers to know before everything changed.

And at the center of those words was a promise about the Holy Spirit.

In John 14:12–17, Jesus told His disciples something that must have stopped them cold:

"Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do… And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth… You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."

Greater works than Jesus? The disciples had watched Him heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. How could that promise possibly make sense? Jacob helped us see that the answer isn't found in us — it's found in the Helper Jesus promised to send.

Six Promises That Still Hold Today

Jacob walked us through six specific promises Jesus made about the Holy Spirit in John 13–16, and each one was both theologically rich and practically grounding.

The Spirit empowers our witness. In John 15:26–27, Jesus says the Spirit "will bear witness about me — and you also will bear witness." We don't carry the gospel alone. The Spirit speaks through us as we speak.

The Spirit convicts the world through the gospel. John 16:8–11 tells us the Spirit convicts the world "concerning sin and righteousness and judgment." Jacob put it simply: when we share the gospel with someone, we're partnering with the One who created that person, knows every thought they've ever had, and is already at work in their heart.

The Spirit glorifies Christ through mission. In John 16:14–15, Jesus says the Spirit "will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you." The Spirit's goal is never to draw attention to Himself — it's always to make Jesus fully known.

The Spirit guides us into truth. John 16:13 promises that the Spirit "will guide you into all the truth." Jacob challenged us here in a particularly memorable way, sharing a story from his time in India where a pastor — mostly illiterate — asked him why American church leaders take photos in front of bookshelves with few Bibles in sight. It was a gentle but pointed reminder: the Bible isn't just another resource. It is the living, Spirit-breathed Word of God, fully sufficient and fully alive.

The Spirit expands the mission beyond what Jesus could do in one place. This may be the most surprising promise of all. In John 16:7, Jesus says: "It is to your advantage that I go away." Jacob helped us understand why: Jesus, in His humanity, was limited to one location. But through the Spirit dwelling in every believer, the gospel could reach every nation, tribe, tongue, and people — exactly what Revelation 7:9 describes.

The Spirit sustains us under persecution. Jesus didn't sugarcoat it — He warned His followers that the world would hate them (John 15:18–20). But He also promised the Spirit would be with them in those moments. Jacob shared a remarkable story of a missionary named Jay who was arrested while baptizing new believers overseas. What followed was weeks in prison — and a gospel witness that spread to three different prison cells, with multiple men coming to faith. The persecution didn't stop the mission. It expanded it.

From the Upper Room to Every Neighborhood

What made this message land so powerfully was the way Jacob connected the promises of John 13–16 directly to the story of Acts — and then to us. The same Spirit who fell at Pentecost, who emboldened Peter to preach to thousands, who scattered the early church from Jerusalem to Antioch and beyond — that same Spirit lives in every believer in this room.

As Jacob reminded us: "Every believer is qualified and empowered to the gospel mission — whether it's across the street, in your community, or to the ends of the earth."

That includes you.

A Word for Those Still Searching

Jacob also spoke directly to anyone who may not yet know this Helper personally. The promises of John 13–16 are available to everyone who repents and places their faith in Jesus.
