You Are Living on a Countdown Timer — What Jesus Said About the End of This Age

Meta Description: Jesus made 5 specific predictions about the end of human history — and every one came true. Here's what that means for the age we're living in right now. URL Slug: living-on-a-countdown-timer-what-jesus-said-about-the-end Featured Image: A dramatic wide-angle photo of a clock or timer against a dark sky, or an aerial view of Jerusalem's Temple Mount at golden hour — something that communicates both urgency and hope.

Every time I preach, there's a countdown clock directly in front of me. I can see it in my peripheral vision — every single second ticking down. When it hits zero, it flips from white to red. And what that clock does is remind me of something I never want to forget: my time is limited, and every moment matters.

That's exactly what Jesus was telling his disciples in Luke 21 and Matthew 24. All of human history is on a countdown timer. And the question he answers in those passages is one that matters more than almost any other: When will Jesus return, and what will happen then?

I'll be honest with you — this was the most studied sermon I've ever preached. I'm going to give you a lot of Bible, because what you need isn't my opinion. What you need is what God's Word actually says.

Age One Is Already Over — And It Points Straight to Jesus

Jesus told his disciples in Luke 21:6 that the magnificent temple they were admiring — one of the great wonders of the ancient world, built with stones larger than school buses — would be completely destroyed. Not one stone would be left on another.

In AD 33, that sounded impossible. By AD 70, it had happened exactly as he said. The Roman general Titus sieged Jerusalem, soldiers ransacked the temple for its gold, and stone by stone, that massive structure was dismantled. If you visit Jerusalem today and stand on the Temple Mount, you can still see the stones cast down from the wall.

Five for five — every prediction Jesus made about that era came true.

But here's why it matters theologically: the temple was a type and shadow of Jesus himself. It was the intersection point between heaven and earth, the place where a mediator stood between sinful people and a holy God, and the place where innocent blood was shed for the forgiveness of sin. When Jesus cried out "It is finished" on the cross, the curtain in the temple tore from top to bottom. The system it represented was complete — because Jesus Christ is now the intersection between God and man, the one mediator, and the sacrifice to end all sacrifices.

The Age We're In Right Now — And What We're Supposed to Do With It

After the era of Judaism, Jesus described what he called "the time of the Gentiles" — and that's the age you and I are living in right now.

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus said: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

The phrase "all nations" in Greek is ta ethne — the same word he uses in Luke 21 when he talks about the time of the Gentiles. This is the age we're in: God is gathering people from every tribe, tongue, nation, and language into one family through Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:28 says: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Notice it doesn't say we're all the same. It says we're all one. That's a crucial distinction.

And here's what signals the end of this age. Matthew 24:14: "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

If you've ever wondered why Jesus hasn't returned yet, 2 Peter 3:9 answers it directly: "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

He's not slow. He's patient. Every day he waits, thousands more people are coming to faith around the world. He wants to bring as many home with him as possible.

Four Signs Jesus Said Would Mark the End of This Age

As we get closer to Christ's return, Jesus described four specific signs in Matthew 24. I want to walk you through them honestly.

Sign 1: A rise in global deception. Jesus warned in Matthew 24:4-5 that many would come claiming to speak for him, deceiving people away from the truth. His answer? Read this book. Measure everything — including what I preach — against the Word of God. Just because someone holds a Bible doesn't mean they're teaching it truthfully.

Sign 2: An increase in global chaos. Jesus said in Matthew 24:7-8: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains." The birth pains analogy is important — they don't signal destruction, they signal that something is being born. And as delivery approaches, those contractions come faster and faster.

Sign 3: An increase in global persecution. Jesus said plainly in Matthew 24:9: "You will be hated by all nations because of me." This is already happening across the globe. More Christians were martyred for their faith in the last century than in all previous centuries of church history combined. We need to be prepared — not just encouraged — by what we hear from the pulpit.

Sign 4: A global apostasy fueled by false religion. Matthew 24:10-11 warns that many will "turn away from the faith" and that "false prophets will appear and deceive many people." Jesus even said these false leaders would perform signs and wonders — but miraculous signs don't automatically mean a movement is from the Holy Spirit.

The Third Age — And Why It Changes Everything Today

Here's where it all lands. Jesus said in Luke 21:27: "At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory."

Then he said something I memorized as a kid that still moves me: "Stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

This is not a message of fear. It is a message of preparation. And Jesus himself told us what to do with it in Matthew 24:44: "You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

I can't tell you every detail of how it all unfolds — and I'll be honest, the deeper I studied this week, the more I realized how much there is. But you don't need every detail. You just need to know what time it is. And the hour is late.

Be Ready

The best thing you can do right now is not just attend church — it's to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. Learn his Word. Learn to pray. Learn to share your faith. Know what you believe and why you believe it.

If you're not yet in a discipleship community, I want to invite you to take that next step. At Lake Point, we have a 10-week experience called Rooted that will teach you how to get into God's Word, pray, share your faith, discover your spiritual gifts, and walk in freedom. You can text ROOTED to 20411 to register for the next session.

The clock is counting down. Don't waste the moments you have.
