The Clock Is Running: What Jesus Taught About the End of the Age

Meta Description: Pastor [Name] walked us through Luke 21 and Matthew 24 to answer one of history's biggest questions — when will Jesus return, and what should we do now? URL Slug: what-jesus-taught-about-the-end-of-the-age Featured Image: A close-up of an open Bible with a clock or hourglass softly blurred in the background — evoking the sermon's central image of a countdown timer and the urgency of the present moment.

There's a countdown clock at the front of the stage that Pastor [Name] watches every single Sunday. Every second, it ticks. When it hits zero, it flips from white to red — and a transition happens. This past Sunday, he used that image to set up one of the most thought-provoking messages many of us have heard in a long time.

"All of human history," he told us, "is on a countdown timer."

Opening in Luke 21 and Matthew 24 — two parallel accounts of the same conversation Jesus had with his disciples on the Mount of Olives — Pastor [Name] walked us through what Jesus himself taught about the ages of history, the signs of his return, and what it means for us to be ready. He was upfront with us: this sermon was different. More scripture. More depth. More weight. And he delivered on every count.

Age One: The Era of Judaism — and Why It Ended

Pastor [Name] began by grounding us in history. In Luke 21:5-6, Jesus makes a stunning prediction to his disciples as they admire the magnificent Jerusalem temple:

"As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."

Standing on the Mount of Olives in 33 AD, Jesus made four specific predictions: Jerusalem would be surrounded and left desolate, not one stone of the temple would remain on another, judgment would fall on the Jewish people, and they would be scattered among the nations. Within 37 years, the Roman general Titus besieged the city exactly as Jesus described. Soldiers pried apart every stone of the massive temple — some weighing over 100 tons — to recover melted gold from the cracks. Every single prediction came true, word for word.

But Pastor [Name] took us deeper. The temple wasn't just a building. It was the intersection of heaven and earth — the place where sinful people met a holy God through priests, sacrifices, and the elaborate system of atonement. The great high priest would enter the Holy of Holies once a year, sprinkling the blood of a slain animal over the Ark of the Covenant so that God would see his people covered, not condemned.

Then Jesus came. John the Baptist pointed to him and declared: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." When Jesus cried "It is finished" from the cross, the temple curtain tore from top to bottom. The old system was complete — because Jesus himself became the intersection between God and humanity, the one mediator, and the final sacrifice. The era of Judaism, as a religious system pointing forward to Christ, had served its purpose.

Age Two: The Time of the Gentiles — The Age We're Living In Right Now

This is where we are. Jesus called it "the times of the Gentiles" — or in the original Greek, ta ethne, the same word used in the Great Commission:

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." — Matthew 28:19-20

Pastor [Name] helped us see that the Great Commission and the end of the age are directly connected. This age ends when the gospel reaches every tribe, tongue, nation, and language. As Jesus says in Matthew 24:14:

"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

Some of us wonder why Jesus hasn't returned yet. Pastor [Name] pointed us to 2 Peter 3:9:

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

He shared a striking statistic: every single day, more than 16,000 people in Africa alone cross the line of faith and follow Jesus. Every hour Jesus waits, nearly 700 more people come home. He's not slow. He's patient. He's giving one more day so that one more person has one more chance.

Four Signs Jesus Said Would Come Before the End

As we approached the close of the age, Pastor [Name] rapid-fired through four signs Jesus described in Matthew 24 — and he didn't shy away from their weight.

1. Global Deception. Jesus warned that many would come claiming to speak for him while leading people away from him. Pastor [Name] urged us plainly: read the Bible for yourself. Don't outsource your discernment entirely to podcasts or personalities. Measure everything against the Word.

2. Global Chaos. Wars, famines, and earthquakes — but Jesus described them like birth pangs. They've always existed, but the closer we get to the end, the faster and more intense they become. Something is trying to be born. Romans 8 tells us creation itself "groans in eager expectation" for what is coming.

3. Global Persecution. Jesus said plainly: "You will be hated by all nations because of me." This is already the reality for Christians in many parts of the world. More believers have been martyred in the last century than in every previous century of church history combined. Pastor [Name] challenged us to ask whether the preaching we consume is preparing us for that reality — or just making us comfortable.

4. Global Apostasy. In the final days, many who once claimed faith will walk away from it. False prophets will perform genuine-looking signs and wonders — but not by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pastor [Name] was honest about how sobering this is, and how essential it is that we are rooted in community, in the Word, and in authentic relationships that keep us anchored.

Age Three: The Return of the King

And then — the moment everything has been building toward.

"At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." — Luke 21:27-28

Pastor [Name] closed with the image that anchors everything: Jesus, returning in power, defeating every enemy of God, wiping away every tear, and making all things new. Every nation aligned against Israel, and then the skies crack open.

The message wasn't meant to frighten us. It was meant to prepare us.

"The hour is late," he told us. "And it's time for you to be prepared for what comes next."

Be Ready — Starting Now

Pastor [Name] closed with a pastoral challenge rooted in Jesus' own words: "You must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

His invitation was direct: if you haven't yet gone through Rooted, Lake Pointe's 10-week discipleship experience, now is the time. It's designed to do exactly what this sermon calls us to — get grounded in the Word, learn to pray, discover your spiritual gifts, and build the kind of community that keeps you anchored when the world gets harder. He called it with pastoral forcefulness: every member of this church should go through it at least once.

If you're ready to take that step, you can register by texting ROOTED to 20411.

And if you missed Sunday's message or want to revisit it, we encourage you to watch the full sermon and share it with someone who needs to hear it. This is the kind of message that deserves more than one listen.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." — Matthew 24:35

Not one word Jesus has spoken has ever fallen to the ground. That means his promises of grace are rock solid — and his call to be ready is just as real. Let's be ready.

Social Media Excerpt (Facebook/Instagram): What does Jesus actually say about when he'll return — and what should we do about it? This past Sunday, Pastor [Name] walked us through Luke 21 and Matthew 24 in one of the most scripture-rich messages we've heard in a long time. The hour is late, and it's time to be prepared.
