You Don't Have to Do This Alone: The Holy Spirit Is God, and He Lives in You
Meta Description: The Holy Spirit isn't just a vague spiritual force—He is God, and He wants to live inside you. Here's what that changes about everything.

What if the missing piece in your Christian life isn't more effort — it's more of God?
I've been thinking about that question all week, because it's exactly what I preached on this past Sunday as we kicked off our new series on the Holy Spirit. And I have to be honest with you: this is one of my favorite things to teach. Not because I want to make anyone uncomfortable, but because I believe with my whole heart that too many followers of Jesus are exhausted from trying to live the Christian life in their own strength — when God has already made another way.
The Holy Spirit Is God — Fully, Completely, Actually
Let me start where I started Sunday, because I think this is where a lot of us have a gap in our theology. The Holy Spirit is God. Not a force. Not a vibe. Not a feeling. He is the third person of the Trinity — as fully God as the Father and the Son.
In the very first verse of your Bible, Genesis 1:1, we read: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." The Hebrew word for God here is Elohim — a plural, majestic title. And just a few verses later, we see the Spirit of God hovering over creation. Then in verse 26, God says, "Let us make mankind in our image." Singular God. Plural persons. Father, Son, and Spirit — one God, three persons, always in perfect unity.
And here's why that matters for your daily life: the same Spirit who hovered over creation, who hung the stars in the sky and carved the canyons — that Spirit wants to live inside of you.
Why Jesus Said It Was Better That He Left
I know that sounds strange. But in John 16:7, Jesus tells his disciples something that must have stopped them cold:
"Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you."
Jesus — the one they had walked with, eaten with, learned from — said it is better for them that he leave. Why? Because when he ascended to the Father, he sent the Holy Spirit to dwell not just among us, but inside us.
This was always God's plan. In Ezekiel 36, God promised: "I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh… And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes."
God's plan was never just to give us rules to follow. His plan was to put his own Spirit inside his own people.
The Difference Between Willpower and Spirit Power
Here's the honest truth I shared Sunday: without the Holy Spirit, the Christian life is just an exercise in willpower. And willpower runs out.
Every Christian has said it at some point — "I'm trying to do better. I'm really struggling with this." I've said it. But what we actually need isn't to try harder. We need to get closer to the One who makes us better.
In Galatians 5, Paul puts it plainly: "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." The fruit that grows from a Spirit-led life — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — these aren't things you manufacture. They're things the Spirit grows in you.
Corrie ten Boom, who ministered faithfully even as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, said it this way: "Trying to do the Lord's work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the ministry of Jesus just flows out of us."
If you're burned out on Christianity, I'd gently ask: are you full of the Spirit, or are you running on your own fuel?
Three Prayers to Start Today
I closed Sunday with three simple prayers — and I want to invite you into them right now, wherever you're reading this.
Holy Spirit, show me. Psalm 139 says, "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Ask him to reveal anything in you that needs to go, and to show you more of his presence.
Holy Spirit, fill me. Throughout the book of Acts — chapters 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13 — the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit again and again. And Ephesians 5:18 says, "Be filled with the Holy Spirit." This isn't a one-time event. It's a daily invitation.
Holy Spirit, use me. Jesus said in Acts 1:8, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses." When you're full of God, you naturally become about what God is about.
God isn't a possessor — that's what the enemy does. God is an empowerer. And he will gladly empower everyone who invites him in.
You Were Made for More Than This
My prayer for this whole series — and for every person reading this — is a genuine revival of the Holy Spirit in your life. Not a weird, chaotic, uncomfortable experience. Just more of God. More of his power. More of his fruit. More of his presence guiding your everyday moments.
You were never meant to do this in your own strength. God's plan was always to be inside you.
So open your hands. Invite him in. He's ready.
