You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone: Finding Your Place in God's Family

Did you know the very first thing God declared "not good" in all of creation wasn't sickness, wasn't suffering, wasn't death—it was loneliness?

Right there in the opening pages of Scripture, God looked at his creation and said, "It is not good that man should be alone." And I've been thinking about that all week, because it turns out we are living in the middle of a loneliness crisis unlike anything our generation has ever seen.

The U.S. Surgeon General has officially declared loneliness a health epidemic. One study compared chronic loneliness to smoking a pack of cigarettes every day. Premature death rates climb more than 60%. The risk of heart disease increases by 29%, stroke by 32%, and for older adults, the risk of developing dementia increases by 50%. People who feel lonely are more than twice as likely to develop depression.

We were made for family. And ultimately, we were made for the family of God.

What the Church Actually Is

This past Sunday, we continued our walk through Ephesians chapter 2, landing on verses 19 through 22. I want you to read these words slowly:

"So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you are also being built together for God's dwelling in the Spirit." — Ephesians 2:19-22

The church isn't an organization. It's not a denomination or a building. It is God's family. A family of people who are related to God—who have become his children—and therefore related to one another as brothers and sisters.

I know some of you have been hurt by churches. I understand that, because the church is full of imperfect people. I heard a poem years ago that stuck with me: "To live above with those we love, that will be glory. But to live below with those we know, well, that's another story." But here's what I want you to see: if you love Jesus, you're going to love his family. Your pathway to growth absolutely intersects with what God is doing in his family.

Step One: Belong

God wants you to belong to his family—and there is only one way in. It's through Jesus.

Paul strains at four different metaphors in this chapter to help us understand it. The church is like a nation—you're either a citizen or you're not. It's like a body—you're one part of a greater whole. It's like a family—you're either in it or you're not. And it's like a building—God is putting you into something he is constructing. Every single metaphor carries the same message: you were out, but now you're in.

How do you get in? I explain it with the ABCs. A—Acknowledge that you are a sinner and that Jesus is Lord. B—Believe in him with all your heart. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that he lived a perfect life, died on the cross in your place, and rose from the dead. C—Confess that Jesus is Lord of your life. If you believe it in your heart, you'll say it with your mouth.

That's what it means to be in Christ. And when you do that, you are in his family.

Step Two: Become

God doesn't just put you in his family and leave you there. He is actively working to make you more like Jesus. Notice the verbs Paul uses in Ephesians 2:21-22—"being put together" and "being built together." These are present tense. The work is continual and ongoing. It doesn't stop.

And here's the beautiful thing: it's passive. Being built. God is doing it. You're not doing it on your own. He is working in you.

But let me tell you what he uses to do it: God's people and God's word. The only way you will grow is by being connected to both. That's why I keep encouraging everyone to get into a connection Bible study group. I talked to several people this past Sunday who were heading to a group for the very first time—and that is exactly where God wants to take you. If you haven't taken that step yet, it's not too late.

Step Three: Bless

Here's where it all comes together. God works in you so that God can work through you.

Paul says in verse 21 that God is building "a holy temple in the Lord." And you are that temple. You learned it as a child—"Here is the church, here is the steeple"—but we got it backwards. The people are the church. Not the building. God lives in you, and he has placed you in his family because he wants to work through you to bless others.

There is a cathedral in Barcelona, Spain called the Sagrada Família that took 144 years to complete. But the building God is constructing has been under way for 2,000 years, and when that cathedral is dust, God's temple will still be standing. You are part of something eternal.

There's a Seat at the Table With Your Name On It

Maybe you showed up this week feeling lonely. Maybe you've been carrying the weight of wondering whether God could really use someone like you—someone who knows their own secrets, their own failures, their own story.

Here's what I want you to hear: God loves you. He has a purpose and a plan for your life. There is a seat at the table. There is a name on a chair. And it might be yours.

If you've never trusted Christ, today is the day. You can only do it in the moment you're in—yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't here. And if you've trusted Christ but haven't been baptized, don't delay. The pattern all through the book of Acts is the same: believe and be baptized. It's your first step of obedience. It's your public confession of faith.

Belong. Become. Bless. That's what God wants for you. And it starts by coming home to his family.
